Let’s do laundry! No one says.

Ok so one of the most daunting task we have is laundry and I pretty much have a system going on with my laundry that works for me and it might work for you too.

  • The first thing you want to do is set up your laundry area. You want it to be something that you don’t have to set up each and every time you do your laundry including if you have to take your laundry to the laundry mat.
  • I have all my laundry supplies set up on a small table in my laundry room.
  • For those who have to take their laundry to the laundry mat you might want to dedicate a small carrying container or bag that’s always ready to go.
  • You want to have your laundry detergent of choice, bleach, stain remover, fabric softener or dryer sheets.

A little bit  about laundry detergents.

  • Now for me it’s a preferential thing. What works for me may not work for you and vice versa.
  • There are some really good laundry detergents out there whether your a pod, liquid, or dry detergent person. What ever your preference is on laundry supplies do that.
  • I recently started using homemade laundry detergents and homemade dryer sheets.

  • Ok so for those who are new to doing laundry your going to want to separate your clothing. Oh and be sure to read the labels on all your clothes. Not all whites can be bleached and not all clothes can go either in the washer and some not in the dryer.
  • I keep my clothes in a 3 sectional laundry basket. One section for pant, another for shirts and the third for underclothes, socks, towels, and wash cloths.  That way when we take our clothes off they are automatically separated and therefore saving me time on laundry day.
  • On laundry day I only have to separate whites from darks.

There is no one way to start the laundry

  • I usually start by washing my pants first.
  • There is no one way to start the laundry I just choose to do it that way.
  • Last are my whites and usually the smallest of the loads.

laundry is one of my least favorite things to do

  • Now as far as how often to do laundry like cleaning the house, laundry is one of my least favorite things to do.
  • I don’t like ironing, folding, or pretty much any of it. But it is a necessary thing if I want to wear clean clothing.
  • I have found what works for me is the how many people in your family system.
  • If there’s only one of you, chances are you have enough clothing to last you an entire week at least 5 days worth right?
  • You don’t really want more than 5 days worth of laundry to do at one time. And for a single person doing laundry every 5 days is not a bad thing.
  • For a household of 2 like me and my girlfriend, I do laundry twice a week.  I choose Mondays and Thursdays as my laundry days. Mondays because that’s when I do my major cleaning around the house. (I’ll link this to my 30 minutes a day cleaning post)  By Thursday we’ve accumulated a small pile of clothing that’s ready for laundry day, again keeping the laundry small with less than 5 pairs of pants and such for each of us.
  • This way I’m not over whelmed with a lot of clothing.
  • For a family of 3, you might want to choose 3 days a week.
  • My daughter has 4 children and she and her husband. She does laundry  every day.
  • The thing is you just don’t want to get behind in doing laundry. The more people you have in the family and if you get behind that laundry will be such a daunting task and well let’s face it it’s already not a fun thing why make it worse on yourself.

  • Now as soon as the dryer is finished I pull out the clothes and hang up what needs hung or fold and put away.
  • Don’t wait and do it all when everything is done.
  • Taking things out and hanging them right away saves on ironing (remember I hate to iron) and again I’m not overwhelming my self  with a lot of work at one time

I have a dirty little secret…shhh

My dirty little secret is or should I say was my side of the closet.

Oh how I hated to try and find a spot to hang an article of clothing in it.

My dirty little secret

With the help of Dollar Tree, Wal-Mart and a few items in the back of the closet, I was able to clean up and organize everything.

The first thing that I did was empty everything out.

Then one by one I went through my clothes and what I didn’t want to keep or noticed that I hadn’t worn (and let’s face it wont wear) I put in a pile to donate.

Well let me tell you that pile grew large.

I picked up some storage bins from Dollar tree to put my t-shirts in instead of having them hung up like they had been.

I picked up a shower rod from Wal-Mart and had hoped to put it in the closet with no problems.  Well that didn’t work out like I thought it would.. so what’s a girl to do but improvise.

This is what I came up with.

It might seem strange but it works very well.

I hung up all my summer sleeveless tops on this and in the back are my hoodies.

In a large bin I put my winter coats. In small closed bins are my crocheted hats.

In the end, this is what I have now and I’m much happier with it.

So  my laundry tip for the day, week and month. Don’t overwhelm yourself.

Pick the days of the week that you will do laundry and stick to it.

Use bins to separate the clothes to make it easier come laundry day.

Put clothes away right away to cut down on ironing time.

Don’t forget to check out my 30 minutes a day to a clean house post coming Wednesday and on Friday homemade cleaning products.

Happy laundry day!
